Former Head of Institute (emeritus)
Prof. Dr. med. Rolf E. Brenner
Prof. Brenner is a renowned expert in skeletal diseases and has been head of the Division for Biochemistry of Joint and Connective Tissue Diseases since 1998. The division was originally founded as an endowed chair by Merckle-Ratiopharm and became an established part of the Orthopaedic University Hospital of Ulm.
After his retirement in October 2024, PD Dr. Jana Riegger-Koch became provisional head of division.
Prof. Brenner is mainly interested in basic orthopaedic research with clinical focus, addressing diseases such as osteoarthritis, disc degeneration, and osteogenesis imperfecta. The research of Prof. Brenner’s lab comprises e.g., investigation of underlying pathomechanisms, development of treatment strategies, and testing of new biomaterials. Prof. Brenner is a member of the Center of Trauma Research at the University of Ulm and active consultant in the Centre of rare Skeletal Diseases (Zentrum für Seltene Skeletterkrankungen - ZSSK) at the University Hospital of Ulm.
